Why Fat Mark of Bromsgrove? Well, I moved to Bromsgrove
1991. It was a purely logical choice at the time with my family
friends in Birmingham and my work in Worcester. Since moving to
I have come to really like the place. I can't fully explain
It just seems to be the right size for a start. You're not lost
the urban sprawl of a big city and you're also don't feel like everyone
knows your business, as you would in a small village. Its sense
history also appeals to someone of my tastes and I enjoy nothing more
a stroll up the High Street on a Saturday afternoon.
With my increasing level in contentment and the onset of my thirties
came an expanding wasteline. As I discovered the delights of many
of the town's pubs and curry houses this growth continued. From
overly slim 11st 7lbs in 1991 I grew to
rotund 15st+ by 2001. And thus I

have met and married a lovely local girl who I now share a home with on

was born and bred in Bromsgrove, educated at local schools and is able
to walk to her job in the town. She sometimes finds it hard to
why I should have such an affinity for the place that she just sees as

You wait 17 years for an Italian and
Back in December 2007 I was excited about the prospect of a Prezzo opening in the old Baylis shop on the High
Street. This excitement evaporated as the project seemed to stall
before it started! Eventually, things started happening mid-2008
and the restaurant finally opened
mid-August. To say it's been a big success would be an
understatement as it's constantly busy and booking is definitely
recommended! Claire and I paid a visit in September 2008 and
But what was happening over the road!? 25 High Street (the old
Yorkshire Bank premises) had received planning permission for
restaurant use and work started. What could be coming to town
now…? The answer came in September when posters for Pizza Express appeared! This eaterie opened early November 2008
and I paid a visit with some friends on November 12. It was still
finding its feet a bit but the overall feeling was a big 'thumbs up'.
So, can Bromsgrove support two pizza & pasta restaurants almost
opposite each other? Initial impressions are that it can as both
are still busy. The fact they have a different feel with Prezzo
being upmarket and stylish while Pizza Express is more trendy and
lively should help. Also, the Prezzo menu is more pasta based
while Pizza Express (obviously!) has a menu favouring pizza so the
competition isn't quite as obvious as it looks. Personally I
think having places like this on the High Street is a boon to the town
and I wish them both great success!
